Marc J. Spirn, MD

Dr. Marc Spirn graduated Cum Laude with Distinction in all subjects from Cornell University. He received his medical doctor degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. Dr. Spirn completed an internship at New York University School of Medicine and a residency in Ophthalmology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, where he was appointed Co-Chief Resident. He then completed a two-year vitreoretinal fellowship at Wills Eye Institute in Philadelphia where he was awarded The William Tasman, MD Outstanding Fellow Recognition Award. Dr. Spirn joined Mid Atlantic Retina in July 2008. He is on staff at Wills Eye Institute and is an instructor in ophthalmology at Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine. He is also a lecturer for the medical resident education program at Wills Eye Institute and for the medical students of Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine.

Dr. Spirn is Board Certified in Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Spirn has authored numerous scientific publications and book chapters on vitreoretinal diseases and is also a co-investigator for several trials and studies on diabetic macular edema, age-related macular degeneration, and uveitis. He is on the editorial board for Retina Times and has been a scientific reviewer for various ophththalmologic publications.

Dr. Spirn’s clinical interests in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery include retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, macular hole, macular pucker, retinal vascular disease, ocular trauma, uveitis and complications of cataract surgery.
