Dr. Allen C. Ho is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Cornell University College of Arts and Sciences, receiving highest distinction in all subjects. He graduated from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and was elected Co-Chief Resident during his ophthalmology residency at Wills Eye Hospital. He completed a Fellowship in Vitreoretinal Diseases at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital where he was awarded a Heed Ophthalmic Fellowship. Currently, he is Attending Surgeon at Wills Eye Institute and Co-Director of the Retina Fellowship program.
Dr. Ho is Board Certified in Ophthalmology, an Associate Examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology and a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He is an active member in several ophthalmologic societies including: American Academy of Ophthalmology, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, The American Society of Retina Specialists, The Macula Society, The Retina Society, The Society of Heed Fellows, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology. He serves on the Executive Committee of the Retina Society.
He is Professor of Ophthalmology at Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine. Dr. Ho is Editor-in-Chief of Current Opinion in Ophthalmology and Chief Medical Editor of Retina Today, a global publication that features new treatments for retinal disease. He has been an invited lecturer at numerous national and international ophthalmic meetings. Dr. Ho has authored numerous scientific publications on retinal disease, is author of The Wills Eye Hospital Color Atlas and Synopsis of Retinal Disease, and is a member of the Editorial Review Boards of Ophthalmic Surgery, Lasers and Imaging, Ophthalmology Times, Ocular Surgery News, and Evidence Based Ophthalmology. He is a recipient of several clinical research grants investigating new treatments for macular diseases sponsored by the National Eye Institute and received the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Senior Achievement Award. He is an invited Advisory Board member for the Alcon Vitreoretinal Surgical Advisory Committee and the Ophthalmic Devices Committee of the United States Food and Drug Administration. He is a scientific advisor for many surgical device and pharmaceutical companies pursuing improved treatments for macular and retinal disease.
Dr. Ho is the Principal Investigator at Wills Eye Hospital of several collaborative clinical trials evaluating new treatments for age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy and maintains special interests in macular diseases, diabetic retinopathy, surgical retinal diseases and clinical trials investigating new treatments for vitreoretinal diseases. Dr. Ho was named to Castle Connolly’s “Best Doctors in America”, “America’s Top Ophthalmologists” and “Top Doctors of Philadelphia” as elected by peer physicians. He is a volunteer for Eye Care America, serving underinsured Americans with medical need.
